A packaging license is a permit to use packaging materials. It is a legal requirement under the German Packaging Act. To comply, you must register the amount of packaging you use with a licensed system. This system is designed to promote recycling and reduce packaging waste.

Choosing a dual system

A dual system is a licensed organization that manages packaging waste on behalf of businesses. They handle the registration, reporting, and recycling of packaging materials, ensuring compliance with packaging regulations.

Registering with Lizenzero: A step-by-step guide

In this example, let's assume you're a small business sending 100 packages to Germany annually. Each package uses approximately 200g of cardboard.

1. Determine the total weight of packaging used per year and enter it into Lizenzero.

Example: 100 packages/year * 200g/package = 20kg of cardboard/year.

2. Provide your business information: Enter your company details.

Note: If you don’t have a VAT ID, which is the case for many US sellers, you can select the German or local tax number option. Here you can insert either your EIN, SSN, SIN, business or individual tax number.

3. Complete your packaging license registration: Accept the data protection regulations to continue to the next pages and fill in the remaining details under Payment & shipping, and Check & order.

Note: Remember that you can change your packaging volumes at any time throughout the year. At this stage, it's sufficient to provide an estimate.

 

Renewing your license

Your packaging license needs to be renewed on an annual basis. Your chosen dual system will notify you about renewal before the renewal deadline.

  • Check renewal requirements: Review the renewal process outlined by your dual system.
  • Provide updated information: If necessary, provide your updated business or packaging information.
  • Pay renewal fee: Complete the payment as instructed by the dual system.
